CHILE: Death in the Andes puts armed forces in the spotlight

In its worst peacetime military disaster, the armed forces lost 45 conscripts in mid May when commanding officers ordered 485 new recruits to march into the mountains despite bad weather warnings. The soldiers, mainly aged 18 and 19, had just begun a year's mandatory service and were caught in a blizzard near the Autuco volcano, 600km south of Santiago. The incident has thrust the armed forces into the spotlight in an election year.
